William Murray is the Mary and Gus Stathis Professor of Greek History at the University of South Florida's Department of History, within the College of Arts and Sciences. He holds affiliations with Classics and the Alliance for Integrated Spatial Technologies. His roles include founding director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Hellenic Studies (now the Ancient Studies Center), department chair (2001-2006), and current director of the Ancient Studies Center.
Education: PhD in History from the University of Pennsylvania (1982). Research focuses on ancient seafaring, naval warfare, and maritime archaeology, with projects spanning Greece, Israel, and Turkey. Notable achievements include authoring *The Age of Titans* and collaborating on reconstructing warship rams from the Battle of Actium using 3D laser scans.
Awards include the Charles Elliott Norton Lectureship and Onassis Foundation recognition. His work bridges archaeology and technology, exemplified by his Actium project. Teaching specialties include classical Greek history, warfare, and historiography through figures like Herodotus and Thucydides.
Professional activities include visiting scholarships at the University of Haifa and the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. He remains active in public scholarship through the Archaeological Institute of America's National Lecturer program and academic publishing.
