Thomas Clements is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Manchester's Department of Classics, Ancient History & Egyptology and holds concurrent positions as a Fellow in Hellenic Studies at Harvard University's Center for Hellenic Studies and a Margo Tytus Visiting Scholar at the University of Cincinnati. From September 2025, he will join the University of Edinburgh as a UKRI/ERC-funded Postdoctoral Research Fellow. His research focuses on Archaic and Classical Sparta, particularly territorial dynamics in the Peloponnese. Clements earned a PhD in Classics from the University of Manchester (2022), preceded by an MA (2017) and BA in History (2016).
Research Interests:
- Archaeological and historical study of Sparta and the Peloponnese
- Greek social and economic history
- Epigraphy and ancient historiography (Herodotus, Thucydides)
- State formation processes in ancient Greece
Teaching Experience: Lecturer in Greek History at the University of Manchester (2022–2024), with extensive teaching in Greek language, ancient history, and archaeology.
Grants and Projects: Current involvement with the Edinburgh-based 'Class Struggle in Ancient Greek Democracy' project funded by UKRI/ERC. Formerly supported by the North West Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership (AHRC).
