Ivan Matijasić is a Lecturer in Greek History at Ca' Foscari University of Venice, specializing in ancient historiography and classical reception. He teaches Greek History courses across programs like Conservation and Management of Cultural Assets, Philosophy, and Letters. His research focuses on historiographical methods, ancient geography, and the reception of classical texts, with a particular emphasis on Herodotus, Thucydides, and Hellenistic historians. Current research includes analysis of John Enoch Powell’s classical papers and ancient sources on the Illyrian region. He is proficient in multiple languages including Italian, Croatian, English, German, and French.
Research Interests: His work bridges ancient historiography and classical reception, exploring topics such as textual criticism of classical authors, historiographical techniques in antiquity, and the geopolitical narratives of ancient Greece. He examines how ancient texts were reinterpreted in later periods, including under Fascist regimes and in 20th-century scholarship.
Publications: His recent work includes studies on Strabo’s geographical writing, the expulsion of intellectuals from Alexandria, and the ideological use of classical texts in Nazi Germany. He has also reviewed major scholarly works on Dikaiarchos, Apollonius Rhodius, and Herodotus’ Histories.
Grants: He leads a project on the classical papers of John Enoch Powell, funded by the Italian Ministry of Education (MUR-PNRR/EU).
