William Mathis serves as Dean of the College of Musical Arts at Bowling Green State University (BGSU), following his tenure as Chair of Music Performance Studies. Previously, he was Professor of Low Brass at Northwestern State University of Louisiana for 13 years.
His education includes a bachelor's from Wichita State University and master's/doctoral degrees from the University of Michigan under distinguished pedagogues: H. Dennis Smith, Larry Zalkind, Russel Widener, Johann Doms, and Harvey Phillips.
Dr. Mathis specializes in Brass Performance (trombone) and Chamber Music, with significant contributions to Music Education. His performance career spans solo appearances at the Festival of Sandpoint and Ann Arbor Chamber Orchestra, alongside collaborations with the Canadian Brass, Keystone Institute, and International Trombone Festival. He actively performs with regional orchestras including Toledo, Utah, and Wichita Symphonies.
As a performer, he is integral to the Glass City Brass Quintet and LATEX Trombone Quartet, frequently appearing at national events like the Eastern Trombone Workshop and state music education conventions. His leadership connects BGSU to broader artistic networks through residencies and festivals.
While his administrative role limits direct student advising, his legacy in brass pedagogy continues through the college's performance programs. He maintains an active performance schedule that exemplifies professional artistry for students.
