Dr. William G. Kaelin Jr. is the Sidney Farber Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator. His Nobel Prize-winning research deciphered the molecular mechanism by which cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability, revolutionizing understanding of cancer metabolism and leading to new therapies.
Research focuses on tumor suppressor genes, particularly VHL protein function in oxygen sensing and its implications for cancer development. Current work investigates HIF protein roles in kidney cancer and triple-negative breast cancer, developing targeted therapies including HIF-2α inhibitors.
Dr. Kaelin maintains an active laboratory developing novel cancer therapeutics and has contributed to FDA-approved treatments for renal cell carcinoma and anemia. His discoveries have transformed clinical approaches to cancers involving oxygen-sensing pathway dysregulation.
