William Johnston is a Lecturer in Biological and Biomedical Sciences at Glasgow Caledonian University. He holds a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Glasgow (2018–2021) and a BSc (Hons) in Applied Biomedical Science (1st class) from Glasgow Caledonian University (2014–2018).

His research focuses on microbial biofilms in clinical contexts, including their role in oral infections, gynecological conditions, and hospital-acquired fungal pathogens. Key projects include DENT-ProTec for denture protection and ORMAT for oral microbiome analysis in collaboration with Haleon plc.
Johnston has received the SULSA ECR Prize (Microbe) (2023), Associate Fellowship (AFHEA) (2023), and IBMS President's Prize (2018). He serves on editorial boards for Biofilm and Critical Reviews in Microbiology, and has conducted peer review activities for multiple journals since 2020. With 19 research outputs and an h-index of 8, his work contributes to combating biofilm-associated infections globally.
