Professor Gordon Ramage is an Honorary Senior Research Fellow and Professor of Medical Microbiology at the University of Glasgow Dental School. With over 25 years of experience in clinical microbiology, he is a world-leading expert in clinical biofilm infections with a particular focus on fungal pathogens. He serves as Chair of the European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Study Group for Biofilms (ESGB) and is a Fellow of the European Confederation of Medical Mycology (FECMM).
Professor Ramage earned his B.Sc. (Hons) in Medical Microbiology from Edinburgh University in 1996, followed by a Ph.D. from Queen's University of Belfast in 1999. He completed postdoctoral research at the University of Texas Health Science Center and the University of Calgary before returning to the UK in 2004. He was appointed Lecturer in Microbiology at Glasgow Caledonian University, then Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow Dental School in 2007, where he received his Personal Chair in 2012.
His research focuses on clinical biofilm infections, particularly fungal (yeasts and moulds), with projects spanning the oral cavity and beyond. His group investigates complex inter-kingdom biofilm infections and develops more effective ways to diagnose and treat these infections. They also study controlling moulds and yeasts on surfaces within hospital environments, with extensive experience in microbiome and mycobiome analysis to inform biofilm model systems for testing antimicrobials.
Professor Ramage's recent work demonstrates a strong emphasis on diabetic foot ulcers, Candida auris pathogenesis, and inter-kingdom biofilm interactions. His research combines advanced omics approaches with practical applications for developing novel antimicrobial strategies against resilient biofilm infections.
Among his notable honors are:
- Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath)
- Chair of the European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Study Group for Biofilms (ESGB)
- Fellow of the European Confederation of Medical Mycology (FECMM)
- Honorary member of the British Society for Medical Mycology (BSMM)
Professor Ramage has established significant industry partnerships with GlaxoSmithKline, Unilever, Gilead Sciences, and BluTest Laboratories. His current funded projects include plasma-activated antimicrobial systems for wound infection, OMICs approaches to oral health, targeted endolysin treatment of bacterial vaginosis, and integrated analysis toolkits for personalized oral healthcare.
He leads the Infection and Immunity Research Group at the University of Glasgow, which maintains active collaborations across multiple disciplines to address complex biofilm-related infections through both fundamental and translational research approaches.
