William Dowdall is a Professor of Flute at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, where he has taught since 2004. Previously, he served as Principal Flute of the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra (1979–2004) and RTÉ Concert Orchestra. Born in Dublin, he studied in Cleveland under Maurice Sharp and Donald Erb, fostering his dedication to contemporary music.
