Vourneen Ryan is a professional flautist, teacher, and performance psychologist affiliated with the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM). She holds academic qualifications including MA, MSc, BMus (Hons), LGSMD, and PGDip. As a teacher, she focuses on flute studies and integrates mental skills training into her pedagogy. Vourneen currently serves as a lecturer at RIAM and leads career development workshops for students.
Her performance career includes roles with major orchestras such as the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, where she held the position of Co-Principal Flute. She has contributed to acclaimed recordings with the Louth Contemporary Music Society and collaborates with ensembles like the Merchant Winds quintet and Gael Winds.
Vourneen’s research interests stem from her experience in high-pressure performance environments. She earned a Master’s in Sports, Exercise and Performance Psychology from Waterford Institute of Technology and now applies mental training techniques to music education. Her consultancy, The School of Performance, provides performance coaching and teacher training programs such as ‘Find your ‘Flow’ and Flourish!’, funded by an RIAM Amplify Research grant.
She has delivered workshops at the University of Limerick and DKIT, and contributed to the European Conservatoires’ SMS project (2017). Her work bridges music performance, psychology, and education, emphasizing practical mental skill development for musicians.
