William D. Bowman is a Professor in the History Department at Gettysburg College, where he has worked since 1994. He holds a PhD and MA in modern European history from The Johns Hopkins University (1990 and 1984), and a BA in History, Philosophy, and Theology from the University of San Francisco (1981). He previously taught at the University of Connecticut, Texas Christian University, and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

His research focuses on cultural and social history, including the history of medicine in Vienna, suicide studies in 19th-20th century Europe, and sports culture in German-speaking Central Europe. He co-authored Imperialism in the Modern World and translated Pietas Austriaca, reflecting his expertise in Habsburg monarchy history and world history pedagogy.
He has chaired the History Department (2003-2008), served on college committees, and taught abroad at the University of Lancaster and DIS Copenhagen. His sabbatical projects (2016-17) included studies on the Jewish sports organization Hakoah in Vienna and a history of the FIFA World Cup (1930-2018). He teaches courses ranging from introductory world history to senior seminars on Nazism and specializes in modern European history (post-1789), with emphases on Germany, Russia, and Britain.
