William Buchman serves as an Adjunct Lecturer in Bassoon at DePaul University's School of Music, a position he has held since 1997 while maintaining his role as assistant principal bassoon of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 1996. He also coaches the Civic Orchestra of Chicago's bassoon section and has performed globally as a guest principal with ensembles including the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
His educational background features a Bachelor of Science in Physics magna cum laude with Honors from Brown University (1987), followed by physics studies at Universität Fridericiana Karlsruhe through a DAAD Fellowship, and bassoon performance training at Yale University School of Music and the University of Southern California.
Buchman specializes in orchestral bassoon performance with deep expertise in chamber music repertoire spanning Baroque to contemporary works. His artistic focus encompasses solo performance practice, historical performance techniques with ensembles like Music of the Baroque, and collaborative artistry with leading musicians including Daniel Barenboim and Emanuel Ax.
His notable honors include:
- First prize in the 1990 Gillet Competition of the International Double Reed Society
- DAAD Fellowship for physics research in Germany
As an educator, Buchman has presented master classes worldwide and previously taught at Southern Methodist University's Meadows School. His performance career features solo appearances with the Chicago Symphony and at Lincoln Center's Mostly Mozart Festival, along with festival residencies at Grand Teton and St. Barts.
He performs extensively with the Chicago Symphony Winds, Chicago Chamber Musicians, and Music of the Baroque, maintaining an active schedule that bridges orchestral, chamber, and solo performance contexts while contributing to bassoon pedagogy through institutional teaching and master classes.
