William Binchy is the Regius Professor of Laws at Trinity College Dublin's School of Law. He has held this position since 1992, following roles as Research Counsellor at the Irish Law Reform Commission and Special Legal Adviser to the Department of Justice. His work spans private international law, torts, and human rights, with notable contributions to family law reform and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. He has also served as Commissioner with the Irish Human Rights Commission (2000–2011) and organized workshops for African judiciary on constitutionalism.
Education: BA (1967), BCL (1969), LLM (1972) from NUI; Barrister-at-Law (1968); MA (1993). Awards include Fellow of Trinity College (1992) and Honorary Bencher of King's Inns (2010).
Research focuses on globalizing human rights frameworks, judicial systems in Africa, and comparative law. Recent projects include the African Human Rights Judgments Database and constitutional workshops for African chief justices. His publications include co-authored works on private international law, torts, and family law, alongside articles on medical negligence, embryo research ethics, and prison accountability.
