Willem Toonen is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Science, Department of Earth and Climate, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His research focuses on lowland river systems, investigating how climate change and human actions have influenced fluvial processes and landscapes over millennia. He leads projects on the Meuse, Nile, and Central Asian rivers, examining hydroclimatic impacts on ancient societies and modern flood risk assessments. Key interests include flood regime changes, paleoflood data, and geomorphological processes.
His work integrates sedimentological and geomorphological data to enhance flood risk management. Current research highlights include the Holocene dynamics of the Nile and Yangtze rivers, and the role of ENSO in flooding patterns. Collaborations span global institutions, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach.
Toonen teaches courses on landscape dynamics, paleoclimate change, and field excursions in the Netherlands and France. His findings have been widely covered in news outlets and academic platforms, emphasizing the societal relevance of paleohydrological research.
