Prof. Jürgen Herget is a full Professor of Physical Geography at the University of Bonn’s Department of Geography since 2004. His research focuses on Paleohydrology, Geomorphology, and Ice Age processes, particularly in Siberia and Northern Germany. He investigates historical extreme water events, fluvial dynamics, and glacial lake outburst floods. Herget teaches advanced courses in physical geography, geomorphology, and flood risk analysis, and supervises graduate students.
Research interests include flood reconstruction methods, sedimentary processes, and the interplay between human activity and river systems. He has authored/co-authored over 200 publications, including textbooks like Geomorphologie: Eine Einführung and monographs on paleoflood studies. His work bridges geology, hydrology, and environmental science, with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches.
Herget is a member of the editorial boards for Geographische Rundschau and international organizations like DeuQua and InQua. He actively collaborates on projects addressing historical hydrology and climate change impacts. Notable contributions include studies on the 2021 Ahr River flood and medieval flood events in Europe.
