Dr. Philip Marren is a Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography at the University of Chester, affiliated with the School of Humanities and Social Science and the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. He holds a PhD from Keele University (2000), an MSc from Imperial College London (2006), and a BSc from the University of Luton (1994). His postdoctoral work included roles at the University of British Columbia (2007-2008) and the University of the Witwatersrand (2001-2004).
His research focuses on fluvial geomorphology, hydrology, and sedimentology with a primary emphasis on glacial retreat impacts in Iceland, dryland river systems, and natural flood management in the UK. Key areas include proglacial river dynamics, extreme flood events, and the geomorphic effects of environmental change. He has conducted fieldwork across four continents, contributing to studies on jökulhlaups (glacial outburst floods), sediment transfer processes, and floodplain evolution.
Teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including modules in Flood Risk Assessment, Modelling and Engineering. His pedagogical focus includes hydrology, river management, natural hazards, and physical geography research methodologies.
Recent publications (2025-2018) highlight advancements in rural flood risk equity, Iceland's proglacial river adjustments, and dam impacts on floodplain geomorphology. His work integrates field observations, sedimentological analysis, and interdisciplinary approaches to address climate-driven landscape changes.
Marren serves as Senior Postgraduate Research Tutor and actively contributes to the Sustainability and Environment Research Institute. Notable research outputs include over 40 peer-reviewed articles and collaborative studies on topics ranging from volcanic jökulhlaups to avulsion dynamics in bedrock-alluvial rivers.
