Wil Swindler is a Faculty Lecturer of Music and Coordinator of Jazz Studies at Colorado State University, where he also directs Jazz Bands. He holds a B.M. in Jazz Studies from the University of North Texas (2001) and has been based in Colorado since 2006. A renowned saxophonist and composer, Swindler leads multiple ensembles including Wil Swindler's Elevenet and the modern bop quintet GoodRattle. His work spans performances with orchestras like the Colorado and Dallas Symphonies, as well as big bands such as the Peter Sommer Septet and Al Hood’s H2 Big Band.
Swindler’s research interests focus on innovative jazz composition, ensemble performance practices, and the intersection of classical and contemporary jazz forms. He has received international commissions from military bands, symphony orchestras, and big bands, including a 2008 Gil Evans Fellowship from IAJE. His compositions emphasize rhythmic complexity, thematic development, and cross-genre fusion.
As an educator, Swindler teaches saxophone, composition, and jazz ensemble direction at CSU and previously at the University of Northern Colorado and Denver University. He directs the CSU Jazz Summer Workshop and maintains a private teaching studio in Denver. His pedagogical focus includes jazz improvisation techniques, ensemble leadership, and contemporary performance practices.
Swindler’s recent projects include the orchestral concerto The Point (premiered 2023) and albums such as Space Bugs (2022) and Universe B (2010). His work has been featured on recordings with artists like Ingrid Michaelson and Ben Markley.
