Wenli Cheng is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics at Monash University, where she obtained her PhD in 1996. Her research focuses on international trade and finance, economic development, environmental economics, inframarginal economics, and Austrian economics. Prior to academia, she spent nearly a decade in government and economic consulting, advising clients on mergers, pricing, and intellectual property rights. Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to economic inequality and environmental sustainability.
Education: PhD in Economics, Monash University (1996).
Research interests include the intersection of financial inclusion, land rights, and policy design in emerging economies. Recent work examines microfinance institutions in China, pollution control policies, and the impact of land titling on rural credit markets. Her interdisciplinary approach spans theoretical and applied economics, with a focus on developing countries.
Publications highlight trends in financial inclusion mechanisms, environmental taxation, and the long-term effects of historical policies. Notable collaborations include studies on China’s rural land reforms and sub-Saharan Africa’s maternal health challenges.
