Wenkai Xu is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Statistics, University of Warwick, and affiliated with the Foundations of Machine Learning System (FMLS) at the University of Tübingen. He is also a member of the ELLIS Society. Before this role, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oxford's Department of Statistics under Professor Gesine Reinert, and completed his Ph.D. at the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit, University College London, under Professors Arthur Gretton and Aapo Hyvarinen.

His research focuses on statistical machine learning, including hypothesis testing, comparing distributions, Stein's method, and network analysis. He explores entropy and axiomatic connections through transformative approaches. Recent work emphasizes statistical frontiers and network modeling.
Teaching includes ST349 Machine Learning Framework and ST921 Statistical Frontiers at Warwick, alongside prior roles teaching Probability & Statistics for Network Analysis and Information Theory at Oxford.
