Professor Wenjie Sun is a Professor of Geospatial Science, Computer Science, and Asian Studies at Carthage College since 2006. She holds a B.S. in Geography from Beijing University, and M.A./Ph.D. in Geography with a focus on GIS from Indiana University-Bloomington.
Her research integrates GIS and remote sensing to study land use change, public health, and urban environments. Notable projects include collaborations with the Kenosha County Health Department and studies on brownfield redevelopment impacts. Over 79 community-focused service-learning projects (2012–2022) have been conducted with partners like local governments and nonprofits.
Prof. Sun teaches GIS, remote sensing, and East Asian geography, leading interdisciplinary J-Term study tours to China and Japan. Her work has received media coverage for initiatives like opioid crisis analysis and Foxconn studies. Student researchers under her guidance have presented at conferences such as NCUR and AAG.
Her advising and grants emphasize high-impact practices, including spatial analysis for public health and environmental justice. Current projects explore GIS applications in healthcare disparities and urban sustainability.
