Chuanrong (Cindy) Zhang is a Department Head and Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Connecticut. Her research focuses on geospatial technologies and their applications in smart cities, with an emphasis on GIS, remote sensing, and urban sustainability. She leads projects addressing urban land-use dynamics, disaster management, and environmental planning.
Research interests include geographical information science (GIS), remote sensing, geo-spatial statistics, and geocomputation applied to urban landscape ecology, transportation studies, and natural resource management. Notable projects involve analyzing urban expansion in East Asian megacities and integrating multi-source data for environmental monitoring.
Her publications span interdisciplinary topics such as aerosol dynamics, spatial econometrics, and urban growth modeling. Zhang’s work bridges technological innovation with societal challenges, emphasizing resilience in urban environments. She is affiliated with UConn’s Storrs and Hartford campuses, contributing to the Resilient Cities, Racism, and Equity initiative.
