Wendy R. Sherman Heckler is the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Otterbein University, where she began as an Associate Professor of Science Education in 2007. She has held several administrative roles including Director of Graduate Programs in Education (2009-2012), Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of University Programs (2012-2017), and Interim Provost (2017-2019). As Provost, she leads the Academic Affairs Division and collaborates with the President's Cabinet on institutional strategy.
Her educational background includes:
- Bachelor's degree in Teaching and Learning from The Ohio State University
- Master's degree in Teaching and Learning from The Ohio State University
- Doctorate in Teaching and Learning from The Ohio State University
Sherman Heckler's research focuses on science education, teacher education, and Wittgensteinian perspectives in educational research. She has contributed to the Springer Encyclopedia of Educational Philosophy and Theory and the International Handbook of Research in History, Philosophy, and Science Teaching. Her work also extends to women's leadership and physics education for K-12 teachers.
Her scientific awards include:
- Martin Luther King Peace and Justice Award from Otterbein University (2017)
- Community Support Award from the Columbus City Schools Board of Education (2018)
- 2022 Calendar Honoree of the Columbus chapter of Women for Economic and Leadership Development (WELD)
Sherman Heckler has served as advisor, second reader, or graduate faculty representative on 59 Master's level projects at Otterbein. She secured significant grant funding:
- Over $850,000 from the Ohio Department of Higher Education (2010-2018) to support physics professional development for 225 middle grades science teachers across 56 school districts in Central Ohio.
Her service to the university includes co-chairing the Accreditation Steering Committee (2011-2015), serving on the Diversity and Inclusion Committee, and leading the Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation (TRHT) Campus Center. She currently serves as Past Board Chair of Communities In Schools of Ohio, a nonprofit focused on dropout prevention.
