Dr. Kristy McCray is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health & Sport Sciences at Otterbein University, where she also serves as Faculty Trustee. Her research focuses on sexual violence prevention in college athletics, bridging her expertise in sport management and social justice. She holds a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in Kinesiology (Sport Management), following prior roles as an academic advisor for athletes and executive director of a rape crisis center.
Her education includes a B.A. in Print Journalism and Political Science (University of Southern California, 2002), an M.Ed. in Postsecondary Administration (USC, 2007), and a Ph.D. (Ohio State, 2015). McCray has been recognized with awards including 2024 Otterbein Advisor of the Year and 2017 New Teacher of the Year.
Research interests emphasize socio-ecological factors influencing sexual violence in sports, masculinity constructs, and institutional policies. Her work analyzes athlete behavior patterns, prevention program efficacy, and campus safety frameworks. Recent studies investigate background checks for athletes, career readiness gaps, and ethical education impacts.
Award-winning publications include a 2023 socio-ecological study on athlete victimization and a 2019 analysis of background check legal implications. McCray actively collaborates with organizations like the North American Society for Sport Management and Sport & Recreation Law Association.
Her advisory roles include service on Columbus Police Chief’s Advisory Panel, advocating for community policing reforms and transparency. Grants include Bloomberg American Health Initiative funding (2023) and Ohio Department of Higher Education grants targeting campus culture change.
