Wendy L. Sims

Wendy L. Sims is a Curators' Distinguished Teaching Professor of Music Education at the University of Missouri's School of Music (College of Arts and Science). She holds a PhD from Florida State University and has been a faculty member since 1985. Her roles include Director of Undergraduate/Graduate Studies in Music Education and advisor to numerous students. Dr. Sims specializes in early childhood and elementary music education, focusing on curriculum development, teacher training, and research methodologies.

Her educational background includes bachelor's and master's degrees from Kent State University, followed by a PhD in Music Education from Florida State University. She previously taught K-6 general music and currently volunteers as a music teacher at MU's Child Development Laboratory.

Research interests include music pedagogy, child development through music, and the psychological aspects of music education (e.g., impostor syndrome among students and faculty). Her work spans national and international journals, with editorial roles at the Journal of Research in Music Education and International Journal of Music Education. She is a co-author of influential books like Strategies for Teaching: Prekindergarten Music and Music in Prekindergarten.

Dr. Sims has received prestigious awards, including the Kemper Fellowship for Excellence in Teaching and NAfME's Senior Researcher Award (2016). Her leadership includes roles in the National Association for Music Education, Missouri Music Educators Association, and International Society for Music Education (ISME), where she was honored as an Honorary Life Member.

Her recent articles analyze impostor phenomenon in music students, trends in music education research, and ethical publishing practices. She advocates for mentorship in doctoral training and the integration of research into classroom practice.
