Wendy Beth Hyman is a Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Oberlin College, serving as Chair of Book Studies and a Trustee of the Shakespeare Association of America. She specializes in 16th- and 17th-century literature, focusing on intersections between literature, science, visual culture, and classical mythology. Her work examines how literature constructs knowledge and engages with Renaissance technologies and intellectual frameworks.
Education: BA from Smith College (1997), MA and PhD from Harvard University (2000, 2005). She has taught globally, including in Italy and England, and integrates humanities “labs” in her courses, using resources like the Allen Art Museum and Special Collections.
Research interests include early modern machines, technologies of wonder, and pedagogical approaches to social justice through Shakespeare. Her publications include *Impossible Desire* (Oxford UP, 2019), *Teaching Social Justice Through Shakespeare* (Edinburgh, 2019), and co-edited volumes on Renaissance automata and literary fictions. Current projects involve a visual companion to *Macbeth* with student Clair Wang and a monograph on Shakespearean romance and technological ingenuity.
Awards include the CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title for *Impossible Desire* (2021) and leadership roles in professional associations.
