Marissa Greenberg is an Associate Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of New Mexico, specializing in 16th- and 17th-century British and Irish literary studies. She directs the British and Irish Literary Studies program and focuses on early modern drama, performance, and modern adaptations of classical works. Her teaching emphasizes fully online courses on figures like Shakespeare and Milton, alongside topics such as non-Shakespearean plays and women in early modern drama.
Her research includes Metropolitan Tragedy: Genre, Justice, and the City in Early Modern England (2015), supported by an NEH fellowship and UNM grants. This work redefines tragedy through London's historical and urban contexts. Current projects explore embodied movement in 17th-century revolutionary texts (e.g., John Milton's writings), Shakespearean adaptations (e.g., The Merchant of Santa Fe), and identity-based pedagogy in online literature education.
She has published in peer-reviewed journals like English Literary Renaissance and Renaissance Drama, and collaborates on open-source Shakespeare editions. Awards include NEH and UNM grants recognizing her scholarly contributions.
