Associate Professor Wei Wang is an interdisciplinary linguist at the University of Sydney, serving as Chair of Chinese Studies. He holds a B.A. from East China Normal University (ECNU), a Postgraduate Diploma from Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), an M.Ed., and a Ph.D. from the University of Sydney.
His research focuses on translation studies, sociolinguistics, and multicultural education, with a particular emphasis on Chinese discourse, ethnic identity, and intercultural communication. Notable works include Ethnic Identity of the Kam People in Contemporary China (2022) and Media Representation of Migrant Workers in China (2017).
He leads projects like 'China's outbound academic translation and publication: A sociological translation study,' applying Actor-Network Theory and Bourdieu's sociology to analyze translation processes. Awards include the 2022 FASS Excellence in Teaching Award.
Supervision highlights include published doctoral theses on news translation in China, Yuwen curriculum changes, and film subtitle translation. Current projects explore migrant workers' identities and linguistic landscapes in Sydney's Chinatowns.
