Dr. Andres Rodriguez is a Senior Lecturer in Modern Chinese History at the University of Sydney, within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and Discipline of History. He holds a BA from the University of Chile, and an MPhil and DPhil from the University of Oxford. His research focuses on China’s borderlands, ethnic minorities, and the impact of World War II, with a particular emphasis on nation-building and transnational networks. Rodriguez has held positions at the University of Southampton (UK) before joining Sydney in 2013. He is affiliated with the China Studies Centre and Sydney Southeast Asia Centre, and has received grants from institutions like the National History Center and British Academy.
His research explores how frontier workers shaped China’s national identity in the 20th century, including studies on ethnic minorities’ political engagement and the global ramifications of WWII. Notable works include his 2022 book Frontier Fieldwork and articles on Yi elites and wartime connectivity in China’s southwest. Rodriguez frequently engages with public discourse, as seen in his 2015 interview on China’s WWII commemoration.
His grants and projects highlight interdisciplinary approaches to history, including funding for publications and research on constitutional border-making post-WWII. Though no advisees are listed, his work underscores collaborative efforts in academic networks across Asia and the UK.
