Rana Mitter is the S.T. Lee Professor of U.S.-Asia Relations at the Harvard Kennedy School, part of Harvard University. He specializes in modern Chinese history, U.S.-Asia relations, and political science. His research explores China’s role in global affairs, post-WWII narratives, and contemporary political dynamics. Mitter has authored seminal works like Forgotten Ally: China’s World War II and China’s Good War, which reshaped understandings of China’s wartime contributions and modern nationalism.
His recent articles analyze China’s geopolitical dilemmas, Xi Jinping Thought’s intellectual roots, and the legacy of the Tokyo Tribunal. He also co-authored a strategic report on UK-China relations and produced the documentary Meanwhile in Beijing. Awards include the 2020 Medlicott Medal and the 2014 RUSI/Duke of Westminster Medal.
Mitter teaches courses on China’s global challenges and Asian security. He previously held a position at Oxford University and serves on boards of the British Academy and the European Council on Foreign Affairs. His sponsored projects include Carnegie-funded research on U.S.-China relations, reflecting his commitment to policy-relevant scholarship.
