Sulmaan Khan is an Associate Professor of International History and Chinese Foreign Relations at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, holding the Denison Chair in International Diplomacy. He specializes in Chinese foreign policy, international security, and Cold War history. Khan earned his B.A., M.A. (2005), and Ph.D. (2012) in History from Yale University.
His research focuses on China's grand strategy, Sino-U.S. relations, and frontier governance. Notable works include Haunted by Chaos (2022) analyzing China's strategic decision-making from Mao to Xi, and Muslim, Trader, Nomad, Spy (2015) examining Cold War dynamics on China's Tibetan border. Upcoming book The Struggle for Taiwan (2024) explores U.S.-China-Taiwan triangular relations.
Publications span Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, and The Economist, with grants from Smith Richardson Foundation and U.S. Department of Energy. He advises on China at INDOPACOM and participates in National Intelligence Council (NIC) seminars.
