Sara Newland is an Associate Professor of Government at Smith College, specializing in local politics of China and Taiwan, and subnational diplomacy between the U.S., China, and Taiwan. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, and was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard Kennedy School's Ash Center. Her research explores local governance, public service provision, and the role of subnational actors in international relations.
Her current projects include a book on U.S.-China subnational diplomacy with Kyle Jaros and leadership of the East Asian Politics Lab at Smith College, where undergraduates conduct research on Chinese and Taiwanese politics. She is affiliated with the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations as a Public Intellectuals Program fellow and serves on the U.S.-Taiwan Next Generation Working Group.
Key publications include analyses of paradiplomacy in U.S.-China relations (China Quarterly, Pacific Review), and pedagogical studies on teaching Chinese politics in the 'new Cold War' era. Her work bridges academic research with policy engagement, emphasizing the interplay between local governance and global geopolitics.
