Oriana Skylar Mastro is a Center Fellow at Stanford University’s Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI) and Courtesy Assistant Professor of Political Science. Her expertise focuses on Chinese military/security policy, Asia-Pacific security dynamics, war termination, and coercive diplomacy. She holds a B.A. from Stanford University and an M.A./Ph.D. from Princeton University. Mastro also serves in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, currently as Deputy Director of Reserve China Global Strategy at the Pentagon.
Her research spans China’s strategic behavior, U.S.-China competition, and regional security challenges, including Taiwan, the South China Sea, and Sino-Russian alignment. She has authored multiple influential books, including Upstart: How China Became a Great Power (2024) and The Costs of Conversation (2019). Her work appears in Foreign Affairs, International Security, and Security Studies.
Mastro has received prestigious awards, including the APSA Best Book Award (2020) and the Individual Reservist of the Year (2016, 2022). She is affiliated with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and the Council on Foreign Relations.
Her military roles include strategic planning at INDOPACOM J56 and contributions to U.S. Asia strategy. She teaches courses on international security, Chinese foreign policy, and military strategy, blending academic rigor with real-world policy analysis.
