Siegfried S. Hecker is a Research Professor (Emeritus) in the Department of Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University, and a Senior Fellow Emeritus at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI). He served as Director of Los Alamos National Laboratory from 1986–1997 and remains an emeritus director. He holds a PhD in metallurgy from Case Western Reserve University (1968).
His research focuses on nuclear weapons policy, nuclear security, and global threat reduction. Key areas include North Korea's nuclear program, Iran's nuclear aspirations, and fostering international cooperation to secure ex-Soviet fissile materials. He has authored seminal works on nuclear diplomacy and led initiatives with Russian and Chinese scientific institutions.
Hecker's career spans academic, industrial, and government roles, including roles at General Motors Research and leadership at Los Alamos. His honors include the Presidential Enrico Fermi Award and foreign membership in the Russian Academy of Sciences. He continues advising on nuclear nonproliferation and safe nuclear energy expansion.
