Dr. Wei Qiu is a tenured Professor at the Stritch School of Medicine, Loyola University Chicago, with joint appointments in the Department of Surgery and Department of Cancer Biology. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and alcoholic liver disease (ALD), employing molecular biology techniques, transgenic mouse models, and clinical sample analysis.
- Education:
- BS, Wuhan University, China
- PhD in Molecular and Cell Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences-Beijing
- Postdoctoral Fellowship, Dr. Jian Yu’s lab, University of Pittsburgh
Dr. Qiu’s laboratory has identified critical roles for tyrosine kinases like FAK, EphA2, and ABL kinases in HCC progression and therapeutic resistance. His team currently investigates resistance mechanisms of FDA-approved therapies (e.g., sorafenib, lenvatinib) to improve treatment efficacy.
Recent publications highlight his work on spatial transcriptomics (2025), ABL2 kinase in ALD (2023), and FAK-ITGB8 interactions in HCC (2022). These studies span cell signaling, drug resistance, and epigenetic regulation.
Dr. Qiu is funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). His lab has mentored 11 graduate and postgraduate researchers, including PhD candidates and MD/PhD students.
