Wayne Edward Bates

Wayne Edward Bates is an Adjunct Professor in the Graduate & Professional Studies at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), affiliated with the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. He holds a PhD in Civil/Environmental Engineering from WPI, an M.S. from Northeastern University, and a B.S. from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Alongside his academic role, he serves as a Principal Engineer at Tighe & Bond, specializing in water/wastewater treatment technologies, sustainable manufacturing, and EH&S compliance. His teaching focuses on graduate courses such as Industrial Waste, Hazardous Waste Treatment, and Green Engineering.

With over 30 years of engineering experience across public and private sectors, Dr. Bates is a registered Professional Engineer in multiple states and a certified Envision Sustainability Professional (ENV-SP). He actively contributes to sustainability initiatives through roles on boards like the WPI Center for Sustainability in Business and the Town of Ashland’s Water Policy and Sustainability Committees. His office is located in Kaven Hall.
