Warren Porter is Professor in the Department of Integrative Biology at University of Wisconsin-Madison's College of Letters & Science. His laboratory investigates how animal morphology influences energetics, behavior, and ecological responses to climate change using mechanistic modeling approaches, including the Niche Mapper™ software platform. Research integrates 3D imaging, computational fluid dynamics, and field validation to examine thermal regulation across species from fiddler crabs to large mammals.
Key research examines environmental contaminant effects on biological processes across multiple organizational levels, from epigenetic modifications to ecosystem impacts. Collaborative work develops models to predict species responses to past, present, and future climate conditions.
Selected publications demonstrate application of biophysical models to diverse taxa including amphibians, marine turtles, insects, and mammals. Recent work extends to paleoclimatic reconstructions and conservation applications for endangered species.
