Dr. Warren Bernauer is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environment & Geography at the University of Manitoba, affiliated with the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources. His research focuses on political economy, political ecology, and Indigenous studies, with a particular emphasis on resource conflicts and environmental governance in northern Canada. He holds a Ph.D. in Human Geography from York University (2019).
His work examines colonial continuities in resource use and governance, particularly around critical mineral extraction, nuclear waste disposal, and energy projects in Nunavut. He collaborates closely with Indigenous communities to study non-extractive economic alternatives such as harvester support programs and small-scale fisheries.
Recent publications analyze environmental assessment practices, uranium mining legacies, and Inuit rights in resource-dependent regions. His scholarship highlights systemic inequities in Canada's transition away from fossil fuels and advocates for Indigenous-led governance models.
