Mostafa Fayek is a Distinguished Professor and Acting Department Head in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Manitoba, affiliated with the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources. He directs the Earth Materials and Archaeometry Center (EMAC) and oversees the Center for Earth Observation Science (CEOS). His academic background includes a Ph.D. in Stable and Radiogenic Isotope Geochemistry from the University of Saskatchewan (1996) and a B.Sc. Honors in Geology and Chemistry from Carleton University (1989).
Fayek's research focuses on geofluids and ore systems, anthropogenic geochemistry, and the application of SIMS technology in archaeometry. He explores stable isotopes to trace element cycling across Earth’s systems, investigates actinide migration in near-surface environments, and applies geochemical methods to archaeological studies, such as tracing Mesoamerican turquoise trade routes. His work integrates field-based studies with advanced analytical techniques like SIMS and synchrotron analysis.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on mineral deposits, instrumental techniques in geology, isotope geology, and advanced geochemical analysis. His research has produced significant publications on uranium deposits, hydrothermal systems, and environmental geochemistry. He collaborates on projects related to nuclear waste disposal analogues and mineral resource exploration.
Key research themes include the geochemical evolution of ore-forming fluids, isotopic fingerprinting of materials, and the interplay between tectonics and mineralization. His work bridges fundamental geoscience with applied challenges like resource sustainability and environmental stewardship.
