Professor Walter Marcotti is a leading figure in Sensory Neuroscience at the School of Biosciences, University of Sheffield, where he has been a Royal Society University Research Fellow since 2006 and co-director of the Neuroscience Institute. His research focuses on the molecular and physiological mechanisms underlying auditory system maturation, mechanoelectrical transduction, and age-related hearing loss, with a particular emphasis on ribbon synapses and hair cell function.
- PhD, University of Pavia (1997)
- University Degree in Biological Science, University of Pavia (1992)
His work bridges in vitro and in vivo models, including zebrafish and mouse cochlea, to explore sensory transduction, synaptic transmission, and therapeutic interventions for deafness. Recent studies highlight gene therapy approaches (e.g., AAV9-Myo7a rescue) and machine learning predictions for progressive hearing loss.
Key scientific awards include the Sharpey-Schafer Prize (2011) and Wellcome Trust Investigator status (2022). He serves as a reviewing editor for the Journal of Physiology and leads undergraduate and postgraduate modules on Sensory Neuroscience.
