Elisabeth Glowatzki is a Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery and the Department of Neuroscience at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Her research is centered on synaptic transmission in the mammalian inner ear, with a focus on the cochlea and vestibular system. She leads an active laboratory investigating the biophysical and developmental mechanisms of auditory signaling, particularly at the hair cell ribbon synapse.
Research Interests: Dr. Glowatzki's research spans developmental and cellular neuroscience, with emphasis on synaptic transmission in the auditory and vestibular periphery. Key areas include:
- Synaptic transmission between inner hair cells and auditory nerve fibers
- Function and excitability of type II auditory afferents
- Efferent modulation of hair cell activity
- Glutamate signaling and supporting cell function in the cochlea
- Regeneration of synaptic connections after hearing loss
- Neural coding in the vestibular system
Her work employs advanced electrophysiological techniques, including dendritic patch clamp recordings, to study subthreshold events and synaptic dynamics in real time. She has pioneered methods to record from type II afferents, previously considered silent, revealing their role in cochlear damage detection.
Publication Trends: Her 15 most recent publications reflect a strong trajectory in molecular and systems neuroscience, focusing on ion channels, receptor subtypes (e.g., AMPA, nAChR, mGluR), transgenic models, and the development of auditory circuits. The studies combine electrophysiology, pharmacology, and genetic tools to dissect synaptic function across species, primarily in rats and mice.
Scientific Awards and Recognition:
- Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA)
- Deafness Research Foundation Fellowship
- National Organization of Hearing Research Foundation Award
- Hearing Health Foundation Grant

Advising and Grants: Dr. Glowatzki has mentored numerous PhD students and postdoctoral fellows, many of whom have secured faculty and research positions. Her lab has been consistently funded by NIH/NIDCD and other national foundations. She has collaborated extensively with prominent scientists such as Drs. Paul Fuchs, Albert Edge, Dwight Bergles, and Angelika Doetzlhofer.
Labs and Teams: She leads the Glowatzki Laboratory at the Center for Hearing and Balance, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where current postdoctoral fellows continue her work on cochlear and vestibular synaptic physiology.
