Walter Ecton is an Assistant Professor at the Marsal Family School of Education, University of Michigan. His research focuses on the intersections between high school, higher education, and workforce systems, particularly through the lens of diversity, inclusion, and equity. Before joining the University of Michigan, he served as an Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at Florida State University.
Dr. Ecton’s work examines how students navigate transitions into postsecondary education and careers, emphasizing equitable access to Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. He also explores how community colleges and policy frameworks shape workforce readiness. His research highlights the structural and policy challenges faced by traditionally underserved populations in accessing CTE opportunities.
He has secured a grant titled Exploring career development opportunities in a midsize Florida school district (2024–2028), focusing on aligning educational programs with labor market demands. His articles reveal a sustained focus on CTE’s role in bridging educational and workforce gaps, including labor market returns, policy impacts, and pandemic-driven disruptions.
In advising, he teaches EDUC 793: Introduction to Quantitative Methods in Educational Research, equipping doctoral students with statistical analysis and research design skills. His involvement with the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education underscores his commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration on educational equity and system-wide reforms.
