Wallace Best is the Hughes-Rogers Professor of Religion and African American Studies at Princeton University, with affiliations in the Department of History. He also directs the Program in Gender and Sexuality Studies. His scholarship examines African American religious history, particularly religion in urban contexts such as Chicago and Harlem.
Research interests include the intersection of religion, culture, and sexuality in African American communities. He authored 'Passionately Human, No Less Divine: Religion and Culture in Black Chicago, 1915-1952' and 'Langston's Salvation: American Religion and the Bard of Harlem', which received the 2018 Textual Studies Award from the American Academy of Religion. Current work focuses on Harlem's religious landscape.
Awards include the Virginia Ramey Mollenkott Award (2023) for research on religion and sexuality. His publications analyze sacred space production, religious controversies, and sexuality in American religious history.
