Braxton D. Shelley is an Associate Professor of Music, Sacred Music, and Divinity at Yale University, serving as Director of the Program in Music and the Black Church. He holds a BA from Duke University (2012), a Master of Divinity, and a PhD in The History and Theory of Music from the University of Chicago. His research bridges musicology, religious studies, and African American studies, focusing on sacred music practices and their cultural implications.
Shelley's work explores intersections between music, theology, and media, as seen in his books published by University of California Press and Oxford University Press. He actively contributes to interdisciplinary dialogues about the role of music in religious contexts, particularly within Black church traditions.
