Dr. W Dalton Dietrich is a Professor of Neurological Surgery and Scientific Director of The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He also serves as Senior Associate Dean for Team Science and Co-Director of the Institute for Neural Engineering. With over 40 years of research experience, his work focuses on neuroprotection, spinal cord injury recovery, and therapeutic hypothermia. Dr. Dietrich has published over 425 peer-reviewed articles and holds an h-index of 111. He has trained 150+ graduate students and 50+ postdoctoral fellows.
Education: PhD in Anatomy (Medical College of Virginia, 1979); BS in Biology (Virginia Tech, 1974). Postdoctoral training at Washington University in Neurochemistry.
Research: Investigates inflammasome activation, exosome-based therapies, and neuroregeneration after injury. His lab pioneered therapeutic hypothermia for clinical translation and is leading FDA-approved clinical trials for Schwann cell transplantation in spinal cord injury.
Awards: Javitz Neuroscience Award (2023), NIH Faculty of 1000, Provost’s Funding Award, and multiple honors for translational medicine. Serves on editorial boards of journals like Therapeutic Hypothermia & Temperature Management.
Advising & Grants: Mentor to 15 doctoral students; research funded by NIH, DoD, VA, and The Miami Project. Collaborates on industry partnerships through InflamaCore LLC and ZyVersa Therapeutics.
Labs/Teams: Leads multidisciplinary teams at The Miami Project and Institute for Neural Engineering, focusing on neural engineering, cell therapies, and biomarker discovery.
