Volker Müller

Prof. Dr. Volker Müller is Professor and Head of the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Bioenergetics at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, Germany. He is a leading figure in microbial bioenergetics, with extensive contributions to understanding anaerobic metabolism, acetogenic bacteria, and extremophile adaptation.

Research Interests:

Prof. Müller's research spans three major areas: (1) Metabolism and biochemistry of anaerobic microorganisms, including acetogenic bacteria and methanogenic archaea; (2) Biotechnology and metabolic engineering, focusing on syngas fermentation and synthetic microbiology; and (3) Molecular basis of salt adaptation in halophilic and halotolerant microbes. His work has pioneered insights into electron bifurcation, ATP synthases, and energy conservation mechanisms.

Recent Publications:

His recent work (2023–2025) has been published in high-impact journals such as Nature Communications, Joule, and FEBS Journal, focusing on the Rnf complex, CO₂ reduction, hydrogenases, and metabolic engineering of acetogens for biotechnology applications.
