Dr. Vishal Shah serves as an Associate Professor at the University of Warwick's School of Engineering, where he established the Shah Group in 2017 and contributes to the PEATER research group (Power Electronics Applications and Technology in Energy Research). He holds qualifications including BEng, PhD, MInstP, MIET, and FHEA, and directs both the Warwick Cleanroom (NanoFab-RTP) and the UK's only industrial Silicon Carbide (SiC) epitaxial facility.
His research spans application-led materials development with over 15 years' experience in semiconductor technologies for power electronics, quantum applications, photovoltaics, CMOS, MEMS, and sensing. Key focus areas include 4H-SiC power devices and CVD epitaxy for high-voltage applications, SiC utilization in 'More than Moore' technologies, defect analysis in semiconductors, heteroepitaxy techniques, and novel device fabrication processes. His work integrates advanced characterization methods including X-ray diffraction topography and deep level transient spectroscopy.
Shah leads significant research infrastructure including the 150m² ISO class 6 NanoFab-RTP cleanroom, the UK's sole SiC CVD reactor in an ISO class 4 environment, and specialized electrical characterization facilities capable of testing up to 10kV/100A/300°C. His current supervision includes five PhD students working on SiC-related projects ranging from electrochemical etching techniques to hydrogen generation and defect reduction.
He has secured substantial research funding with a PI portfolio of £1.6M and CI contributions totaling £18M across multiple EPSRC, Innovate UK, and Horizon Europe grants. His teaching responsibilities include courses on ASICS/MEMS, Microwave Engineering, and Semiconductor Materials.
