Virginia Kay is a Senior Lecturer in Professional Education and Primary & Childhood Education within the Faculty of Education. She joined in 2011 and holds a BA (Hons) in Education and English from Lancaster University, an MA in Inclusion and SEN from Edge Hill University, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education. With 12 years of teaching experience across Key Stages 1–3 and two years in the U.S., she specializes in inclusion, social justice, and Special Educational Needs (SEN). She leads the National SENCo Award course, leveraging her expertise in SEN policy, practice, and the SENCo role's challenges.

Her research focuses on inclusive education, the complexities of the SENCo role, and youth participation. She co-leads the VOICES_Ed project (2014–present), using photo-elicitation to explore inclusion and SEN from children’s, teachers’, and HE students’ perspectives. She also contributed to a study on student teachers’ perceptions of race and ethnicity through the Faculty Research Apprenticeship scheme.
Virginia is part of the Narrative Research Network and Children’s Rights and Wellbeing Research Network, addressing inequalities in education. Her work aligns with UN SDG 4 (Quality Education).
