Mr Virgil Norrell is a Casual Academic at the School of Music, University of Queensland. He has been involved in music education, teaching woodwind and conducting ensembles for over nine years at UQ. He retired from his role as woodwind teacher at MacGregor State High School and Primary, where he also conducted four ensembles.
Education qualifications include a Bachelor of Arts from the School of the Ozarks, a Master’s Degree in Music from the University of Akron, and education qualifications from Emporia State University.
His research and professional interests span Music Education, Flute Performance, and Orchestral Conducting. He has extensive experience in chamber music performances, orchestral roles, and solo performances, including the Australian premiere of Michael Daugherty’s flute concerto, The Trail of Tears.
Advising and grants: He has tutored in Music Education at UQ for nine years and has been a guest conductor and adjudicator in Queensland. He has also directed community musicals and founded the Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra.
He is a member of ensembles including the Enharmonie Chamber Ensemble, Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra, and has been part of orchestras such as the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra (21 years as principal flutist) and Queensland Pops Orchestra.
