Patrick Nolan is a Casual Academic and flute specialist at The University of Queensland School of Music. He holds the academic rank of Lecturer, focusing on instrumental teaching and music education. Previously, he served as Principal Flute in the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra and The Queensland Orchestra (QSO), with a distinguished performance career spanning chamber music, symphony orchestras, and recordings for ABC Classics and Naxos. Nolan is a co-founder of the Aether Ensemble and Lunaire Collective, emphasizing collaborative chamber music while maintaining roles in youth orchestras like the Queensland Youth Orchestra.
His research interests center on flute pedagogy, orchestral performance techniques, and contemporary chamber music interpretation. Collaborative projects include compiling insights into flute artistry with Michael Cox and Joanna Sullivan. Nolan’s creative works and performances prioritize cross-genre experimentation, historical repertoire revival, and modern instrumental techniques, evidenced in his 2013 and 2012 ensemble performances.
His academic contributions extend to summer/winter music schools and tertiary education, emphasizing mentorship in pre-tertiary and university settings. Notable creative works include performances of George Crumb’s avant-garde Vox Balaenae and Baroque-inspired chamber works by Dohnanyi and Saint-Saëns.
