Vincent DeVita is the Amy and Joseph Perella Professor of Medicine at the Yale Cancer Center and Professor of Epidemiology and of Public Health at Yale University. He served as Director of the Yale Cancer Center from 1993 to 2003 and has maintained continuous appointments at Yale School of Medicine since 1993. Previously, he was Director of the National Cancer Institute and National Cancer Program (1980-1988) appointed by the President of the United States, and Physician-in-Chief at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (1988-1993).
Dr. DeVita earned his B.S. from the College of William and Mary (1957) and his M.D. with distinction from George Washington University School of Medicine (1961). His postgraduate training included residency at University of Michigan Medical Center, senior residency at George Washington University Hospital, and fellowship at the National Cancer Institute.
As a pioneering oncologist, Dr. DeVita developed combination chemotherapy programs that were curative for Hodgkin's disease and diffuse large cell lymphomas. His MOPP regimen increased cure rates for advanced Hodgkin's disease from nearly zero to over 70%, and his collaboration with Dr. George Canellos produced the CMF regimen still used for breast cancer treatment. His research interests span oncology, Hodgkin disease, lymphoma, molecular biology, cancer treatment, and health systems reform.
His extensive publication record includes over 450 scientific articles and editorship of the 11th edition of 'Cancer: Principles & Practice of Oncology.' His recent work shows consistent focus on cancer treatment evolution, lymphoma therapies, oncology policy, and historical perspectives on cancer research. The publications reveal a trajectory from specific treatment protocols to broader considerations of cancer care systems and policy.
