Vincent Chetail

Professor Vincent Chetail is a prominent academic in international law and migration studies, serving as Director of the Global Migration Centre and Professor of International Law at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva. He has held visiting positions at Harvard Law School, King’s College London, and the European University Institute. His expertise spans migration policies, human rights, armed conflicts, and international organizations.

Chetail earned his PhD from Paris II Panthéon-Assas and has authored over 20 books and 70 articles. His research focuses on migration law, refugee protection, and the intersection of international law with humanitarian crises. He advises governments, NGOs, and UN agencies like UNHCR and WHO, notably contributing to the African Union’s Free Movement Protocol and WHO’s pandemic migration policy reports.

His thematic expertise includes armed conflicts, border policies, racism, and international humanitarian law. He has held leadership roles such as President of the Geneva Academy (2019–2024) and Head of the Graduate Institute’s Master in Interdisciplinary Studies (2009–2012).
